Who Are FUTURE STARS

Established in 2009, Future Stars coaching has grown from a one-school after school sports club, to a 34 school, 60+ staff, 9 programme professional sports coaching company. We run a myriad of activities from childcare based, Ofst- ed-registered, wrap around care to specific sport/skill focused sessions and National Curriculum based lessons. We’re passionate about ensuring all children have the opportunity to learn quality sports skills that they can apply to any sport that peaks their interest. By doing this, we hope to inspire the next generation of athletes and encourage healthy lifestyle habits.

We’re really proud to have been able to link with local authorities who have provided funding for children who may not usually have the chance to go to sports clubs. These children have enjoyed many hours of sporting activities where they have had the confidence to work on their skills and fully engage through the power of sport.
In the future (stars), we hope that all children will receive quality sports coaching.

Meet Harley, our first Franchisee in Cardiff

Growing up, a major part of my life was and still is sport, so I always knew I wanted to go into a profession involved in sport in some shape or form. Having completed my degree in sports coaching, I was on the hunt for jobs when I had a meeting with Ben, the owner of Future stars, who I knew vaguely from Clevedon’s sporting circles.

One of the main challenges I faced, was starting up the brand fresh in Wales, with no natural starting point and limited time in my schedule, to grow a business wasn’t simple. I can’t say I overcame this alone, I was greatly helped by Ben who gave me allocated “Franchise growth” time in my current role along with business advice. I was also greatly helped by other team members who shared their vast insight into communicating with and supporting schools and gave me some great ideas on how to get in touch with schools and show them what the company could offer to them.

CAN YOU HIGHLIGHT ANY UNIQUE APPROACHES OR TACTICS THAT PROVED PARTICULARLY EFFECTIVE IN GROWING YOUR FRANCHISE?

The main approach that worked, was offering my coaching services for free to schools as a taster session, enabling me to physically show them what the company can offer and what they would be getting if they decided to work with us. This, cou- pled with attaching a picture of me in emails offering the school taster sessions, proved very effective, although I’m not convinced the latter helped that much!

HAVE YOU ACQUIRED NEW SKILLS OR EXPERIENCES THROUGH THIS VENTURE?

Definitely, however the main one involves the advertising and promotional side of the work. As a coach I had limited experience in this area but now, even in 1 or 2 years, I have a lot of experience in reaching out to schools. This is either in person or over phone/email, speaking with different members of staff detailing what we can offer, promoting clubs we have on social media and interacting with parents professionally on there, as ultimately they, along with the schools, are our customer base.

I’ve also hired a coach recently and the experience of vetting prospective candidates and interviewing/hiring the right person has been a skill that I’ve never experienced before. This took place over the course of two to three months as I wanted to be confident in the person I hired. So far, this looks to have been a successful experi- ence.

Future Stars Founder: Ben's Background

Ben Hazeldine, the company’s founder, has always had a strong passion for sport. The foundations stem from his childhood where Ben would watch rugby with his grandad or go to his own dad’s team ground until he was old enough to play himself. In fact, his parents were role models too: having his mum show him how to organize school sports as a Primary PE Lead and his dad as a PE teacher who transferred to Head of Sports Development at South Gloucestershire Council. Both parents showed him the fun you could have playing sport at primary school level – and as he grew older, he wanted to ensure this provision was broadened.

Knowing sport was the right path for him, Ben embarked on taking coaching qualification after qualification, in the hope that this knowledge would sling shot him towards a successful career in sport. And it did. This partnered with coaching for two professional clubs: Gloucestershire CC and BRFC, further lay the groundwork for establishing Future Stars Coaching.

Whilst working in local schools running his own after school clubs, he realized he couldn’t manage the number of hours requested of him, so hired his first employee who is still working with us today! The numbers snowballed, and the programmes grew more professional and specific in nature (such as teacher CPD) and now, Ben has stepped away from coaching in order to drive Future Stars forward as the leading sports coaching company in the South West.
