Spotlight on the Franchisee
Growing up, a major part of my life was and still is sport, so I always knew I wanted to go into a profession involved in sport in some shape or form. Having completed my degree in sports coaching, I was on the hunt for jobs when I had a meeting with Ben, the owner of Future stars, who I knew vaguely from Clevedon’s sporting circles.
CAN YOU HIGHLIGHT ANY UNIQUE APPROACHES OR TACTICS THAT PROVED PARTICULARLY EFFECTIVE IN GROWING YOUR FRANCHISE?
The main approach that worked, was offering my coaching services for free to schools as a taster session, enabling me to physically show them what the company can offer and what they would be getting if they decided to work with us. This, cou- pled with attaching a picture of me in emails offering the school taster sessions, proved very effective, although I’m not convinced the latter helped that much!
HAVE YOU ACQUIRED NEW SKILLS OR EXPERIENCES THROUGH THIS VENTURE?
Definitely, however the main one involves the advertising and promotional side of the work. As a coach I had limited experience in this area but now, even in 1 or 2 years, I have a lot of experience in reaching out to schools. This is either in person or over phone/email, speaking with different members of staff detailing what we can offer, promoting clubs we have on social media and interacting with parents professionally on there, as ultimately they, along with the schools, are our customer base.
I’ve also hired a coach recently and the experience of vetting prospective candidates and interviewing/hiring the right person has been a skill that I’ve never experienced before. This took place over the course of two to three months as I wanted to be confident in the person I hired. So far, this looks to have been a successful experi- ence.
HOW DO YOU ENVISION YOUR FRANCHISE EVOLVING IN THE COMING YEARS?
The ultimate aim is to grow the franchise as big as possible, growing it a little further and becoming a well known and respected coaching company in South Wales, that offers great opportunities for children to learn and develop within sport, whilst also offering a great professional development to an ever expanding team of coaches I have.
ARE THERE ANY CRITICAL LESSONS OR INSIGHTS YOU'VE GAINED THAT YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE?
The most important one I’ve learnt so far is to always keep believing and working hard on growing your company e.g. send that extra email to a school or ring another office as you never know when it will pay off and if you contact an interested school or get an opportunity to work in a school.
